It was a festive night at our springs sports awards. Najee Harris was named male athlete of the year, while Shelby Harrison won the title for the girls. Harrison also won the prestigious BVAL Girl's Scholar Athlete of the Year award. Antioch High boasted 10 of its 16 teams making it to the scholar stage. (A team has to have 3.0 average or higher.) Our varsity track team had the highest with an average of 3.68 GPA. 76 students were awarded for averaging a 3.5 or higher GPA. Applause to all.

The annual Keep Antioch Beautiful is from 8:30-11 a.m. April 22, a Saturday. The city-wide clean-up event not only brings out hundreds of volunteers to any and all areas of our city, schools have the chance to win money!

For the past three years, we've won the top prize of $500 by having the most volunteers.

Check in at Antioch High that day; you don't have to volunteer for the whole morning. You can also pre-register at:

http://ci.antioch.ca.us/Environment/Keep-Antioch-Beautiful/  or call 925.779-6137, option 1.

A free volunteer thank you lunch follows the event in the Grand Plaza at the Antioch Community Center.

Do you like working with children?

Do you like giving back to the community?

Are you passionate about encouraging the younger generation to pursue higher education?

Do you want to get a feel for for the UC Berkeley campus and student organizations?

Do you need community service hours?

Do you have a younger sibling who would like to participate in this event?

If you answer "yes" to any of these questions, come check out the 23rd Annual Egg Hunt and Learning Festival on the UC Berkeley Campus!  The event takes place on April 15, 2017 and runs from 10 A.M. to 3 P.M. during which post-secondary education will be promoted to under resourced Bay Area Youth through egg hunts, learning booths, and performances while money from raffles, donations and auctions will be given to a chosen beneficiary.  Fun can be had for all ages as younger children participate in crafts and fun activities and high school students and grown ups can volunteer to get in on part of the action.

Unfortunately, while the event is awesome to attend, very few people actually sign up to volunteer, making it extremely hard for the hosts of the event, Eggsters, to be able to continue to hold the festival.  They need 300 volunteers this year, and they haven't even made it into the triple digits yet.  Please take the time to consider helping them out - there are several shifts so you can sign up for part of the day and spend the rest wandering the campus/going into the city/etc.  Also, Deer Valley will be represented there and we've got to show them up right panthers?

Mr. Howell’s three woodshop classes have nearly been as busy as Santa’s elves. Nine groups of students have made -from start to finish – some fabulous “transformer” benches. The bench can easily fold out to a table. The project is made from only nine 2x4-foot by 8-inch pieces of stud grade pine, four bolts and nuts and about 75 exterior grade screws and glue. Howell said the students cut the lumber to specifications, “bored holes for the bolts and stained each piece with a water seal.” The nine table-benches cost about $50 each to create.

Antioch Police Chief Allan Cantando made a surprise visit to Antioch High during the school's recent staff meeting. The Chief made the appearance to praise Principal Louie Rocha and the entire staff and student body for the way a recent lock down scenario was handled. Last Thursday, some 150 Pittsburg High students took their post-election march all the way to Antioch High and attempted to enter our campus. Principal Rocha quickly gathered site safety and shared details with the entire school about what was ensuing and to keep all inside halls and classes until the situation was clear. Thanks to a great partnership between the already-in-place Antioch police officers and Antioch High staff, the area was cleared of PHS students, and AHS students were kept safe. Chief Cantando said the situation could have easily gotten out of hand and become a dangerous event if not for the strong leadership of Rocha and the cooperation of the entire school.

The current grades posted Thursday, September 8, reflect only initial papers that were required for information, such as the syllabus, classroom rules, and laboratory safety rules. These needed to be taken home, read over with a parent or guardian, signed, and returned. If these are missing in the gradebook, a student may ask for another copy if it is lost, or the electronic copy can be read and the page that needs to be signed can be printed, signed, and turned in.

You will find these attached to the assignment in school loop or in the locker in school loop.

Or, you may find them attached to this message.

Please do not hesitate to write if you have any questions or concerns.
