Parking info

From now until the spring of 2018, AHS will undergo upgrades, renovations and major changes, while housing a host of construction crews. While it's all exciting, we will need constant patience and awareness to ensure everyone’s safety. We ask that you pay especially close attention to signs and directions in and around campus. Signs will guide you to proper parking spots and areas closed off for construction purposes.

- The faculty parking lot will be closed during construction.

- Guest and student parking will be across the street from Beede Auditorium and the Don Richardson Gym. It will be clearly marked.


Modernizing Panther Country

Campus construction continues

After an extended process, the Department of California State Architects has approved Antioch High’s next phase of updates and remodel. Construction of the new cafeteria (where the original office was located) and the 1100 wing (former library and classrooms) will start this month.

The 1100 wing (at the back of the school) will be transformed into a state-of-the-art Media Technology Center. Estimated to be complete by early fall, the area will feature green screen audio/video capability and modern technology classrooms.

In addition to a spacious cafeteria, the area will feature a wide open quad area with beautiful landscape. It is scheduled to be complete in the spring of 2018.

Our final construction phase will also include the highly anticipated aquatic swim center, and updating the final three hallways and classrooms in the 300, 400 and 500 wings.

With construction beginning, staff parking will spill over into the gym parking lot. Parents will no longer has access to that lot starting Feb. 14. Pick-up and drop-off are available in the student lot across from the big gym, and on 18th Street beyond the main office and Beede Auditorium.

“We appreciate the community support to improve the school facilities of AHS via Bond Measure B and your assistance with dropping and picking up your children in the identified locations during construction,” said Principal Louie Rocha.

New office, library open

Students and guests are now welcomed through our new entrance. The entry way is next to the 2-story building, which houses a front check-in area, our principal, vice principals, counselors, registrar, student accounts, site safety and office staff on the ground floor. The second story features the library, computer labs, career and college center and the parent-community outreach area.

The long-awaited renovation

It’s a bittersweet sight that Panther Country has been waiting to see for decades.

Bulldozers were hard at work in July knocking down the well-worn bleachers at Eells Stadium, marking one of the first visible signs of the $56.5 million project to renovate aging Antioch High.

"People in the community are no longer asking when it is going to start, but now they want to know what's coming next," Principal Louie Rocha said.

On the other end of the campus, abatement work is under way to prepare the 59-year-old school's cafeteria for demolition. That building, which students have crammed in for decades, was completely razed in early August.

"It's right on schedule," said Tim Forrester, Antioch Unified's associate superintendent of business services.

Added Rocha: "It will be a real shot in the arm, and I think the community feels that our students deserve to have equitable facilities to others in the region."

When work is completed by about 2016, Antioch High will have reconfigured classrooms with upgraded technology, lighting and furniture better suited for student learning groups.

Other features are a new library and media area, including a college and career center; a larger cafeteria that allows more students to eat comfortably; and renovated sports facilities, including a new pool and locker rooms.

The goal is also to preserve some of the school's history, including the large trees, brick facade and plaques along with corridors from the past graduating classes.

The dominoes-like construction project is a delicate operation in that it requires significant coordination among contractors to not interfere with classes in session.

Rocha said that will be the "messy part," and that flexibility will be needed from the students, parents and staff.

So far, so good, according to the firm managing the day-to-day work.

"It's a well thought-out plan," said Rich Dunlap, a project manager with RGM and Associates construction. The contractors on site have already been putting up barriers separating where the kids have had summer sports workout sessions, Dunlap said.

In 2012, voters in the older part of the city approved paying an additional $50 in property tax each year for the renovation. More than 61 percent of voters supported the $56.5 million school bond measure.

If state funding becomes available, additional features from the original wish list could bring the total cost up to $80 million.

A unique aspect of the rebuild is that the suburban campus will become a learning tool for students. The engineering, environmental studies, media technology and public service academies have had a hand in some of the design, construction and public outreach for the renovation.

HKIT Architects

HKIT Architects is providing full architectural services for the dramatic improvement and modernization of Antioch High through Measure B bond. The school is a proud institution with rich traditions and a history of accomplishment. The campus was originally constructed in 1955 and despite recent improvements is an aging facility that needs significant upgrades and modernization to meet contemporary educational standards. Measure B will provide the resources for this effort.

HKIT developed a master plan in close collaboration with the school and district for the entire scope of improvements. Extensive meetings with staff, faculty, board members and students informed the process and led to a detailed program of requirements. The master plan developed a comprehensive “wish list” of all desired improvements. The leadership team with input from the board then developed a priority list of recommended improvements to be developed.

The improvements being developed by HKIT and the rest of the development team under Measure B include a new, larger cafeteria, new library and administration building, new stadium and athletic field with synthetic turf and track, modernized classroom wings, conversion of the existing library to classrooms, other improvements to athletic facilities, landscape improvements to the courtyards and plazas and a renovated central walkway. The design strengthens the sense of entry and civic presence of the school, improves cohesiveness and student pride, incorporates heightened sustainability strategies, contemporary technology, facilities to strengthen academy teaching and learning and measures to improve accessibility for the disabled, safety and security.
